New SITD XL Ruler

I am so excited to announce that I have a new ruler for sale that I designed to deal with a couple issues I have been having. I love the Handi Quiler rulers but the Stitch in the Ditch ruler could be longer… and both ends are straight. I designed a longer ruler that has one curved end to give a bit more flexibility when working on a quilt. Another great feature? The ruler has EeziGrip on the bottom so it doesn’t slide around on the fabric. The ruler is a light green color so it won’t disappear on your quilt.

If you are interested in buying one the timers are available now for $25 in my shop.

Mountain Forest Block

This month’s Quilt Block Mania theme is “Forest.” A couple of years ago I made a tree block so I wanted to do something different this year.

One of my favorite things to do in the winter is to drive up American Fork Canyon to Pine Hollow. When you are in the parking lot the view of Mt. Timpanogos is beautiful and across the canyon the slopes are covered by lovely spruce trees. It is the only place in Utah where I get a tiny taste of Maine.

This block is designed to look like snow capped mountains with slopes of trees at the lower elevations. I tried to keep the construction as easy as possible. The blocks are either Half Square Triangles or plain squares and rectangles. I planned the HSTs to be a bit oversized so they can be trimmed down to perfection. I find that is easier for most quilter.

This block will be free throughout the month of December 2023 and after that it will be $3.50 on Etsy.

Stand Mixer Quilt Block

Since I have had so much time to just sit around while I have been healing, I decided to participate in Quilt Block Mania. The theme for November 2023 is “Kitchen”. I have an image of all the blocks down at the bottom of the post and ALL of the kitchen blocks are FREE during November 2023.

Kaye with her trusty Kitchen Aid mixer.

I love to bake (cook. . .not so much) and my white Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer is the only appliance that has a permanent home on my counter. It is at least 20 years old and I use it several times a week.

This block version doesn’t have all the bells and whistles because it would have ended up being a lot more small pieces. I wanted to keep the block reasonable to make and I think this block conveys the image of a mixer without unnecessary complications. It is traditionally pieced so there are quite a few pieces in a block that ends up 12.5″ unfinished. This means that when it is added to other blocks it’s finished size will be 12″.

This block is FREE during the month of November. This block will still be available for $3.50 on Etsy after November 30, 2023.

Callithump Quilt Pattern

Do you love novelty and big print fabrics? I do! I buy them because I love them and then I get home and wonder, “What in the world can I do with this???” That was the case with this large bird fabric featuring owls and ravens and was the inspiration for this quilt pattern.

If you love crazy fabrics like I do you are going to love the Callithump quilt!

Now you are wondering if I lost my mind when I named this quilt. Nope. I found a new word that I love. A Callithump is a riotous parade accompanied by the blowing of tin horns and other discordant noises. For a quilt designer who was a band director in my earlier years, I just had to make a fun quilt to fit the bill.

Christmas Callithump Quilt on a couch.

Callithump is perfect for those big prints that might be seasonal or novelty or even some of the huge floral prints from the Kaffe Fassett Collective. It is also a perfect quilt for beginning quilters. The center piece of the block is 6″ (finished) so you have a nice sized view of the fabric pattern. Strips of fabric surround the center in varying widths and contrasts to enhance your “Hero Fabric”. The outside border can either use the Hero Fabric or a different large print fabric that I like to call a “Villian Fabric”. In the Halloween version I used two different fabrics but in the Christmas version I used the same sweater fabric as the Hero and in the border. Because. . . you cant have too many ugly Christmas sweaters!

In the pattern I include some guidelines to help you choose fabrics for the various sections of the quilt. I strongly encourage you to read through the pattern before you start, but the good news is that the quilt is easy to sew and works up quickly.

Here’s what one of my pattern testers had to say:

“Really fun pattern. It would be so much faster without fussy cutting but I really wanted to use the new Riley Blake  Kris Kringle fabric.” -Traci Dearborn

I think she did a great job!

This quilt was made by Judy Mischke of Nebraska. I’m not sure what fabric she used as her “Hero Fabric” but this pattern accentuates it beautifully!
