Quarter Note Block

I have been so busy lately that I haven’t been participating in Quilt Block Mania, but when I found out the theme was “Music”, I just had to participate!

Kaye Collins Quarter Note Quilt Block

Did you know that I have a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Music Education??? Yup! I was a high school band director in some capacity for about 20 years. I’ve taught in both Maine and Utah, and even though I “retired”, I have been on staff with a local band. Last summer I had to stop my banding because my quilting was sending me in too many directions.

Anyway. . . this is a simple block. You can use any colors and I think it would be great in a graduation quilt for someone who was in band, choir, or orchestra. The 7 background pieces are pieced and the quarter note is appliqued on. I always use machine applique and the pattern will describe that technique.

I had a lot of fun quilting this little project. I used 7 different colors of Omni thread by Superior Threads to match the wedges. I used a medium gray color in the bobbin and that worked out really well. I used 2 layers of Hobbs 80/20- mostly because the scrap piece was big enough to fold over, so why not? All the solids are RIley Blake Confetti Cottons. My addiction to solids has increased to a level when I had to get a wholesale account. It’s a dangerous situation. All the designs that I used to quilt the multi-point areas with Pro-Stitcher came from Quiltable Designs. I had to shrink some of them down a LOT. Several designs just didn’t work well in this size range, so I may have found a niche that needs to be filled.

Quarter Note Block quilted and turned into a pillow.

Make sure you check out the other blocks! Get them NOW while they are free. Quarter Note Block will be free until September 1, 2022.

Pattern is now $2.99.

  1. this is wonderful. simple yet fun and pretty. thanks for sharing. how cool that you got to be apart of music for so many years.

  2. My hubby and youngest daughter both have degrees in Music Education!! Hubby and I played in the 26th Army Band in New York City during the 1970’s, and I was a church organist for about 25 years!! Love this chance to get all these music blocks!!! Thank you!!!

      1. Yes it is!!! 🙂 When I received my email saying I was officially a member of your email list, there was no link for the quarter note block… Yours is not the only one I’ve had a problem with, and I have no idea what is going on with my computer. How can you send an email with a link, but when I receive it, the link isn’t there? It makes no sense, but this is the 2nd time it’s happened to me in the past week. I hate to ask, but could you possibly send me another email with the link? I can only hope it actually arrives as sent. I realize I’m asking for you to add more work to your already busy schedule, but I just don’t know what else to do. Blessings!!
