Quilt Block Mania: Beach Themed Buoy Block

The Mainer in me came out this month for Quilt Block Mania. As a matter of fact. . . I am actually heading to Maine today to teach at The Yardgoods Center in Waterville this weekend. If you are in the area, give the shop a call- I am pretty sure there are openings. The theme is “Beach” and this is a bit of a stretch, but buoys are pretty much everywhere in Maine so we are going with it!

For those of you who don’t know, a buoy is a floating device that marks something underwater. In Maine buoys are used to mark lobsterpots and each lobster fisherman has a certain color buoy to mark their lines. This color pattern has absolutely no significance- they were just the first colors I grabbed!

This block is easy to sew but you need to follow the directions about trimming or you will be in a mess. You will need a large (12 1/2″) square ruler to square things up and trim nicely at the end.

GET THE BLOCK

Here is the image of all the other blocks and the links. Make sure you go get them before they disappear on April 30! And I just want to say that I really enjoy the thanks yous I get from some of you. It makes this work worthwhile!

Just a heads up that I will not have a free block for you in May because I will be on a transatlantic cruise and I don’t know how the internet will be. I already have June’s block ready to roll!

Stars Like Confetti Quilt

Two versions of the Stars Like Confetti quilt by Kaye Collins.

I am excited to present my new quilt pattern, Stars Like Confetti. It is one of those patterns that looks a lot harder to make than it is. I have made it in two colorways and I am excited to see what YOU will do with it.

Join Kaye Collins in the Stars Like Confetti Quilt Along.

The pattern is available now for $12 and there is a FREE Quilt Along that you can sign up for until Thursday, March 14. GET THE PATTERN

The Quilt Along will begin on March 15 and you will receive videos each week walking you through how to make that week’s block. The Quilt Along will end on April 18 at 11:59 Eastern and everyone who has posted a completed quilt top by that date will be in the drawing for a HUGE grand prize. GET THE PATTERN!

If you like prizes, we will have a prize for every single week of the Quilt Along. All together the prizes total over $500 and some of that can be yours! The prizes come from Handi Quilter, Superior Threads, Riley Blake Designs, and The Yardgoods Center.

The Stars Like Confetti quilt is a great size to use as a Quilt of Valor.

To buy the pattern and join the Quilt Along you just need to click the link below.

A softer color way is also stunning for the Stars Like Confetti Quilt.

French Press

This month’s FREE block is of a French Press. Our theme in Quilt Block Mania this month is “Drinks.” I really wasn’t sure how to make a can of Diet Coke (my drink of choice) and all the “easy” things were taken, so I went looking for ideas.

A French Press is a small coffee brewing device that is for connoisseurs of coffee. Apparently it can even make espresso? I have one recipe that needs a cup of espresso. . .

Anyway, here is the block. It is pretty straightforward and there are directions on cutting, making HSTs and assembling the block. I wonder what you will do with it? E-mail me at ohkayequilting@gmail.com. . . I want to see!

QuiltCon2024: In the Books

This has been quite a week! My hubs and I flew to Raleigh on the 19th and the next day John (one of Handi Quilter’s truck drivers) set up the machines in the classroom and I started loading fabric and batting on them. We didn’t have enough so we ended up working again on Wednesday. My classroom was absolutely beautiful with 2 walls of windows overlooking the front courtyard and street. It was fun to have a view of the big Raleigh letter sign.

What a gorgeous classroom I had at the Raleigh Convention Center!

Avoiding Gridlock with Grids- Thursday Class

Thursday was the first day of the show. The lines out the door at 10:00 were CRAZY. It was a LOT of people. There were some registration issues that had nothing to do with the MQG: AT&T had some kind of break down that shut down lots of people’s phones.

We took the chance to walk around and see the vendors. There were so many people that it was hard to get close to anything. I can only handle that level of “peopleyness” for an hour or two before I went back to the quiet of my classroom.

On Thursday afternoon I taught “Avoiding Gridlock with Grids”. It is a tricky class because we really need four hours and only had three- but the students did a great job on their panels. it felt good to start teaching and work out the nerves.

On Friday the crowds were just as intense but things seemed to run smoothly because people knew what to do and their phones were working again. I taught a “Rulers for Modern Fills and Borders” class in the morning and “Combining Designs for a Stunning Quilt” in the evening. Both classes went well but that evening class was a LOT of fun!!!

Combining Designs for a Stunning Quilt- Friday Evening

Saturday I taught the Gridwork class again in the afternoon and the Rulers class in the evening. Then we had to pack up all the machine parts and accessories and pack up all of my considerable “stuff” (2 suitcases worth). We were absolutely EXHAUSTED by the time we left around 10pm. My feet and knees were killing me!!! And then we couldn’t find any food except McDonald’s, so we just ate CheeseIts in the hotel room.

Sunday morning I got up and headed back to the Conference Center to TAKE a class called “Say YES to Y Seams by Bobbi Gentili of The Geeky Bobbin. I didn’t get nearly as much done in a three hour class as I thought I would but I have a project to finish up at home. I had never tried piecing with scissor cut pieces so we will see how it goes.

Overall it was a great experience. It was so fun to see the community that has built up around QuiltCon. I very much felt like an outsider… I know there were people I knew but I only saw a few of them. I did have several friends from the SLMQG at the convention which was fun.

One really amazing thing to see was the Make and Takes that several of the booths were offering to the participants. It was fun to see all the generations of quilters participating side by side creating easy projects. I even got to make a hair scrunchie at the String and Story booth. Did I mention that HollyAnne Knight was the other teacher in the longarm room? Well, she was!

I did not apply to teach at QuiltCon next year because it is a LOT of work and I figured that they like to have different teachers each year, but I do have some ideas for upcoming virtual events, so stay tuned and make sure you are subscribed to my newsletter. Here is a link to join my list.
