Getting It Right!
If you’ve ever entered a quilt in a show (either to be judged or just for display) you know how important those last finishing touches can be. A crooked, flat or sagging quilt sleeve might seem like a small issue, but it makes a big difference in how your quilt is displayed—and how it’s judged!
In today’s video tutorial, I’ll show you my favorite way to attach a sleeve to the back of your quilt so it hangs straight, just the way you intended. This method works great for any size quilt- even though I show it on a small quilt.
The quilt I’m demonstrating on in this video is a special one—it’s my Handi Quilter Educators Challenge quilt! This piece will be going on the road, showing up at quilt shows around the country, and I want it to look its best every single time it’s displayed. That means giving the sleeve the same care and attention as every other part of the quilt.

- How to measure and cut the sleeve so it fits just right
- The easy trick to keep the sleeve from distorting your top edge
- My favorite hand-stitching method for a clean, smooth finish
- Why that little bit of “extra space” in the sleeve makes all the difference when the quilt is hanging
