Sparkly Ohio Star Quilt Block

Hey there! Welcome to December’s Quilt Block Mania! The theme for the month is SPARKLE.

I decided to keep things simple and share one of my absolute favorite quilt blocks with you. As far as I am concerned, ANY Ohio Star Quilt Block sparkles. This month I want to encourage you to try some sparkly fabric that you might not dare to try in a whole quilt. You can always turn the block into a tote bag or add it to any project you have going!

I think a whole quilt of different colored sparkly blocks would be beautiful! I took this opportunity to break into this beautiful FQ pack of Kona Sheen that I have had on my shelf for at least 2 years. I had a hard time cutting it, but I did!

Instead of using gray for that inner round of the block I actually used a light blue. I really like the shimmer and I think I will be turning this block into a bag or I may add it to a sweatshirt.

As a Christmas gift to all, this block is totally free and will remain free FOREVER. Or as long as this blog is around! If you like what you see here, I would love to have you subscribe to my newsletter so we can keep in touch.

SUBSCRIBE to UPDATES (This SHOULD send you the block by e-mail and you will receive all free blocks in the future)

  1. Kaye, thank you so much for the TroubleShooting video you did with Kim. So helpful. I just finished a quilt on my Amara…and had a thread nightmare. I was using Superior Trilobal….the thread would not stay in the tension discs. I thought I was doing something wrong. Your video pointed out this is a common problem.
So….my question….is there a solution for using “slick” thread or should I just stay away from them.
    Thanks.

    1. First off, I only use the “shiny” threads in the top. I use Bottom Line or Deco Bob (Wonderfil) in my bobbin most of the time. I am not a big proponent of messing with your machine speed but this is a time when I would probably slow down a bit to see if it would stay in the disks better. Try to have your tension not be too tight- as a last resort I would lighten the tension in my bobbin and then the top could loosen accordingly. Good luck! I will be back in the States tomorrow- this would be a good topic for a video!!! LOL. Not sure I can do it before Christmas.

What are your thoughts?
