It is a very sad thing that all quilt shows have been cancelled for this spring. I went to my very first quilt show last May (I know, crazy, huh) and was totally overwhelmed. I said then that I would never enter a quilt.
Right after attending that quilt show and learning that there were a LOT of quilters in Utah, I joined the Salt Lake Modern Quilt Guild. This fall one of our members, Louise Mudd, presented a charity quilting challenge and she had me sucked in before it really occurred to me that it meant I would have a quilt handing at the Utah Quilt and Sewing Marketplace Show this spring. (UQSM)
I stressed a lot, but I got down to work and I made my quilt from some gorgeous fabric. The challenge was to use Robin Pickens’ “Painted Meadow” collection from Moda Fabrics. There were 8 fabrics that you HAD to use. You were allowed to use other fabrics from the collection as freebies and you could use up to four other fabrics. I did choose 3-4 other fabrics from the collection and the background of my quilt is Moda Grunge in vanilla.
I did every stitch of this quilt on my Brother Innovis VQ2400 (except the tag- did that on Brother Innovis VE2200). I am not all that good at quilting on my domestic machine but you do whatcha gotta do. The inside petals of the flowers have an extra layer of batting in a technique I call “fauxpunto.”
Anyway, the auction is to benefit a charity called Humanity Sews that gives sewing machines to those living in abject poverty in 3rd world countries to improve their lives. I am happy to support this cause and it looks like there are a lot of wonderful quilters who were happy to do the same. If you are interested in helping this charity, you can find them at https://humanitysews.org/
The auction has begun. Low bid is $150 on each quilt. The sky is presumably the limit. Go check these beautiful quilts out and consider bidding on one. It will warm your heart as well as your body. 🙂
This is Ghost Flowers. It is my own design and I might get around to making a pattern one of these days. There are flowers quilted into the white background that look exactly like the pieced flowers- thus the name.
